# User-agent parser

Read a user-agent string: browser, engine, OS, device type and whether it is a bot. Leave it empty to read your own browser.

## What it does

Reads a user-agent string and reports the browser, rendering engine, operating system, device type and whether it belongs to a bot or crawler. With an empty input it reads your own browser.

## How to use it

1. Paste a user-agent string from a log, a request header or a bug report.
2. Choose **Text** or **JSON** for the result.
3. Copy or download it, or use it as the next input.

## Examples

`Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) … Chrome/126.0.0.0 Safari/537.36` is Chrome 126 on Windows, rendered by Blink, on a desktop. `Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; …)` is a bot, and the pattern that matched is shown.

## Good to know

- The parts come from two maintained libraries, bowser (browser, engine, OS, device type) and isbot (bot verdict), so the rules follow their releases.
- A device is named only where the string carries one. Chrome reports less each year, so version and device details are often missing.
- A user agent is whatever the client chooses to send: the bot verdict is a hint, not a guarantee.
- The libraries load the first time there is something to read.

## Why does it say unknown?

A user-agent string is free text, and browsers reveal less of it each year: Chrome, for example, freezes the version and hides the device. The parser reports only what the string carries, so a part it cannot find stays unknown.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can it tell me the exact device?

Only when the string names one, as many Android phones and iPhones do. Desktop browsers rarely do, so the device line is left out when there is nothing to show.

### How does it decide that something is a bot?

It compares the string with a maintained list of crawler patterns and shows the pattern that matched. A bot can send any user agent it likes, so treat the verdict as a hint, not as proof.

### Does this tool send my user agent anywhere?

No. Your own user agent is read and parsed in your browser, and what you type is never sent to our servers.
